World Games Challenge
Queen Elizabeth School,Wimborne
Dorset - 17 September 2008
We had an amazing day on Wednesday working with 40 of
the Business Studies students of Mr. Willis. While the 'official
handover' was happening in Beijing, these students were definitely
raising the bar for future enterprisers across Europe.
Using the 6th Form Common room 2 floors up in the
building where Business is based, the room was decked out in flags
covering windows, walls and doors creating an International spectacle.
When we were setting up, I popped out to the car to get something (not
shirking my duty to set up), and looked up as a South Korean flag newly
draped over a window seemed to warn of hostile takeover; luckily, this
was not the case.
From the off, we could tell it was going to be a special
day. The students were into it and we had no problem getting to
know these characters. When we needed volunteers to demonstrate
enterprise, Ted from Jamaica and Rachael from China were more than happy
to risk reputations to take part. From there we were away with our
first World Games Challenge of the new academic year and this was a
closely contested affair mainly between Italy led by the Godfather and
Luigi, China, Great Britain with Michael, Jamaica who along with Martin
and Ted needed an injection from the late arriving Maria to bolster
their team. The other squad in contention were the USA who were
led by Jack Thomas and Kyle and rained down chants of 'USA USA' throughout the day.
There were several great students throughout the day who
excelled and quite possibly surprised themselves. The Russian
squad decimated by injuries carried on despite all odds; South Korea
with Karl, or is it Carl, were steady and dedicated but failed to
convince the judges of their merits despite brokering a 3 way peace deal
with neighbouring USA and Great Britain. During a touching
presentation by the USA, Kyle extended an olive branch to the South
Koreans, saying, 'don't look to the past, look to the future.' Although
I cannot honestly say that people wept, nonetheless it was a highlight.
As the day progressed, medals were won, teams pulled
away and the stage was set for a dramatic fashion show! A teacher,
Ms. Pettifore (sp?), was drafted in to judge the proceedings and the
students did not disappoint while they strutted their stuff along the
Catwalk...8 Countries represented by 6 boys and 2 girls showed off their
Kit designs and dance moves. All were brilliant including Flic
Lund, Jeserect, Maria, then up-stepped Jack Thomas, supermodel
extraordinaire & USA
representative, who had us all falling about with laughter with some
incredible moves including the forward roll to top it all off.
In the end, the USA were crowned champs, winners, gold
medallists and all other accolades that can be heaped upon them.
The 'USA chant' rang out, the anthem played, the students collected their
prizes - framed photos, certificates, personalised chocolate - before
joining the rest of their fellow peers as they streamed out of the
transformed 6th Form Common room more knowledgeable about the Olympics
and hopefully more enterprising than ever before. Job done.
If you were there and can let me know your highlights or
can correct my spellings of names or did you do something that deserves
a mention?....let me know -

p.s. Thanks to Dancing Darren who put me onto the name
of the USA supermodel so that I can give him the credit he truly
deserves.
